About this spot
Built in 1917 (Taisho 6) to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the port's opening, this historic building is affectionately known as Jack's Tower (ジャックの塔), one of the Three Towers of Yokohama. Opening hours are 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, closed on the second Wednesday of each month and during the New Year holidays. Viewing the illuminated exterior from outside is free, and the red-brick and granite clock tower rises against the night sky. Interior public viewing is limited to specific days, generally the 15th of each month, and since the hall is open at night mainly for rental users, viewing for the night view is centered on the exterior. Arrive before sunset to enjoy the transition from dusk to night.
Season & hours
Name: 横浜市開港記念会館(ジャックの塔)
Date & time: 開館時間9:00–22:00・休館日は毎月第2水曜日と年末年始。館内の一般公開は原則毎月15日
Venue: 横浜市中区・横浜市開港記念会館(ジャックの塔)
Tips
You cannot enter the building at night, so viewing is limited to the exterior. There are still people around Nihon Odori (日本大通り) at night, but hold your child's hand while walking. A full view of the tower looks best from a sidewalk a little further away.
Best time to visit
The magic hour just after sunset. The moments when a hint of blue still remains in the sky are the most photogenic.
