Bashamichi Shopping Street
Flow of the course
About this spot
A historic shopping street in Kannai (関内) that still carries traces of Japan's Meiji-era modernization. It is known as the street where Japan's first gas lamps were lit in 1872 (Meiji 5), and is also considered the birthplace of ice cream in Japan. Historic buildings such as the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Cultural History (神奈川県立歴史博物館) line the street alongside long-established shops, making it perfect for strolling and a snack break. It's also just a short walk to the Port Opening Memorial Hall.
Tips
Long-established Western confectionery shops and cafes are dotted along the street. Kids can enjoy looking out for the gas lamp designs as you walk.
Best time to visit
Afternoon. The bright hours before evening are relatively easy to move around in.
