Flow of the course
About this spot
An old temple of the Ji sect (時宗) linked to Priest Ippen (一遍上人), known for the ‘dancing nembutsu’ (踊り念仏), its grounds spread out amid the greenery of Mount Toma (当麻山). It is said to have begun in 1261, during the Kamakura period, when Ippen built a thatched hermitage on this site. Highlights include the Mikage Pond (御影の池), said to be where Ippen reflected his own image in the water to carve a wooden statue of himself. The temple grounds are open for visitors to pay their respects freely.
Tips
About a 15-minute walk from Haratomo Station (原当麻駅). The tree-lined approach has an unpaved dirt path, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
