This castle ruins park, about a 5-minute walk from JR Takamatsu Station, preserves the site of Takamatsu Castle (also known as Tamamo Castle). Counted among Japan's three surviving water castles, it features a rare structure nationwide: moats fed directly by seawater from the Seto Inland Sea. Walking along the stone walls, you'll take in an open view of the Seto Inland Sea islands, along with the scent of the sea breeze. Climb up to the castle tower base for a sweeping view that includes Sunport, where tonight's fireworks will launch - a fitting sight to start the day. Peering into the moat, where sea bream and other fish swim, is also a treat that delights children. Take your time strolling here and soak in the history connected to the Sanuki Takamatsu Domain.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk from JR Takamatsu Station. Admission is 200 yen for adults. Opening hours vary by season, so check the official website in advance. The grounds aren't very large, so you can see everything in about an hour. The morning through early afternoon, before the fireworks-day crowds build up, is the calmest time to visit.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes. The daylight makes the seawater in the moat shine beautifully during this time
