Conclude the day in serenity at the Founder's Hall, surrounded by lush greenery

About this spot

The head temple of the Nichiren sect, cradled in deep greenery that is hard to believe is only an 8-minute walk from Kamakura Station. This ancient temple, with ties to the Hiki clan and its storied history, features an impressive Founder's Hall and an exquisitely moss-covered approach. With few tourists, the grounds where birdsong echoes are serenity itself. The changing beauty of the seasons—fresh new leaves of early summer and autumn foliage—is also a key attraction.

Tips

Admission is by donation (volunteer contribution). The grounds remain open until evening. The approach has uneven footing from tree roots and moss in places, so wear comfortable walking shoes. It is recommended to take a moment to rest on the benches in front of the Founder's Hall.

Best time to visit

Allow 45 minutes; fewer visitors and quiet atmosphere before evening
