Situated at the northern end of Kiryu's main street, Honcho-dori, this is the town's principal guardian shrine. Dedicated to Sugawara Michizane (the god of learning), its elaborately carved shrine structures are designated as Important Cultural Properties by the prefecture. The road extending south from here is a designated preservation district with traditional buildings, making it the perfect starting point for a warehouse-lined walk.

Tips

The shrine grounds are quiet and feature stone-paved paths, making it easy to navigate with a stroller. Every first Saturday of the month, an antique market fills the approach—if crowds aren't your preference, adjust your timing.
