Pay Respects at an Historic Hall Quietly Telling of Mount Asama's Eruption
About this spot
A sacred place of prayer where, according to legend, villagers who fled up these stone steps escaped harm during Mount Asama's massive eruption in the Edo period. The site preserves the history of the Kamahara district, also known as "Tsumagoi's Pompeii," and is still carefully maintained by local people. Visiting the adjacent Tsumagoi Local History Museum deepens your understanding of the events of that time.
Tips
Admission is free and takes about 15 minutes. The rest area across the street is sometimes staffed by local women who welcome visitors warmly. Separate admission fees apply for the museum.
