About this spot

A place of prayer where, during the great Edo-period eruption of Mt. Asama, villagers who ran up these stone steps are said to have escaped disaster. It conveys the history of the Kanbara district, sometimes called the Pompeii of Tsumagoi, and local residents continue to carefully preserve it today. Visiting together with the adjacent Tsumagoi Local History Museum (嬬恋郷土資料館) deepens your understanding of what happened at the time.

Tips

Admission is free and a visit takes about 15 minutes. At the rest area across the way, local mothers sometimes give visitors a warm welcome. The museum requires a separate admission fee.

Best time to visit

Allow 15 to 30 minutes. About 5 minutes by car from Onioshidashi Park.
