Eat hamayaki skewers and bannya-jiru soup, and hunt for souvenirs of fresh fish and dried seafood
About this spot
Fresh fish shops line up along the national highway in this area nicknamed the "Fish Ueno." Aromatic smoke rises from the stalls as squid, shrimp, scallops and more are grilled boldly over open flames in hamayaki style—just walking through makes your stomach rumble. The local specialty bannya-jiru, loaded with fish scraps, is a warming, classic Teradomari taste. Fresh Sea of Japan fish and dried seafood are perfect souvenirs, making this street a heaven for seafood-loving families.
Tips
Eating while walking takes place in spaces in front of shops. Many small shops are cash-only, so it's reassuring to bring extra coins. Free parking is available along the street; it gets crowded before and after lunch on weekends, so visiting early in the morning is more comfortable.
Best time to visit
Allow about 2.5 hours. Morning hours offer the best selection and liveliest atmosphere
