About this spot

Standing right next to Tateyama Station (立山駅), this hands-on museum focuses on the nature of the Tateyama Caldera and the erosion-control (sabo) projects there. It clearly explains, through a huge three-dimensional model and video footage, how the Tateyama Caldera was formed by a massive collapse of the mountain, and visitors can also learn about the history of the sabo engineering works that have continued to protect the Toyama Plain from sediment disasters. The display of trolley cars once used in construction is hugely popular with children who love vehicles, and the museum lets visitors get a playful, hands-on sense of the scale of nature. It is a worthwhile stop to deepen, through knowledge, the power of Tateyama's water that you experienced at the falls.

Tips

Excellent access, just a short walk from Tateyama Station. The museum is air-conditioned inside, so it also makes a good rest stop after walking to the falls. The exhibits center on video and models, so even preschoolers can enjoy them, while adults will find plenty to take in if they read closely. The hands-on study sessions touring the caldera require advance reservation, so check the official information beforehand if you're interested.

Best time to visit

About 1.5 hours. Visiting in the early afternoon, combined with a rest break, is recommended.
