An interactive museum located right beside Tateyama Station, dedicated to the nature of Tateyama Caldera and sabo (sediment control) projects. The formation of Tateyama Caldera, created by a massive mountain collapse, is explained clearly through giant three-dimensional models and video displays. You can also learn about the history of sabo engineering works that have protected the Toyama Plain from sediment disasters. The exhibit of rail carts that have been used in these projects is hugely popular with children who love vehicles, making it possible to grasp the scale of nature through a sense of play. It's a worthwhile detour where you can deepen your knowledge of the water power of Tateyama that you experienced at the waterfall.
Tips
The museum is just a short walk from Tateyama Station with excellent access. The air-conditioned interior makes it perfect for a rest break after your waterfall walk. The exhibits center on videos and models, so even young children can enjoy them, though there's plenty for adults to appreciate if you read in detail. Experiential learning activities within the caldera require advance reservations, so check the official information in advance if interested.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. An afternoon visit combined with a rest break is recommended.
