A renowned Soto Zen temple built as the family temple for Maeda Toshinaga, the second lord of Kaga Domain. Its mountain gate, Buddha hall, and dharma hall are designated as National Treasures. The temple complex buildings are arranged in a single line from the main outer gate, with symmetrical corridors creating an awe-inspiring serene beauty. The grounds represent the pinnacle of Zen Buddhist architecture, with every corner offering a picturesque scene. Many visitors come seeking talismans of Ushashashamaraaja, known as the deity of lavatories, making the experience of worship endlessly rewarding.
Tips
The grounds are flat and easy to walk on, though there are stone-paved paths and gravel, so sneakers are recommended. Early morning visits are quieter and ideal for photographing the corridors. Free parking available. Commemorative stamps (goshuin) can be obtained at the worship reception.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Early morning right after opening is peaceful and highly recommended.
