Gaze Up at the Bronze Daibutsu Created by Takaoka Copper Artisans, and Stroll the Corridor Below Its Pedestal
About this spot
One of Japan's three Great Buddhas, alongside those in Nara and Kamakura, this bronze Daibutsu stands approximately 16 meters tall. It was created by the skilled craftsmen of the copper-working town of Takaoka, pooling their expertise. The statue is well-known for the anecdote of being called a "handsome Buddha" due to its dignified facial features. The corridor beneath the pedestal displays Buddhist paintings and other artworks that can be appreciated while walking around the entire circuit. Standing harmoniously within the town, it is the very symbol of Takaoka.
Tips
Worship is free (donations accepted). From Zuiryuji Temple, it takes approximately 25 minutes on foot via the Hatchohmichi path that leads to Maeda Toshinaga's mausoleum, or about 5 minutes by taxi. Morning sunlight provides ideal conditions for front-facing photography.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 45 minutes. Morning light illuminates the Daibutsu beautifully for photography.
