Leisurely Stroll Through the Castle Ruins Surrounded by Water Moats and Visit the Imizu Shrine Within the Park

A park built on the ruins of Takaoka Castle, constructed by Maeda Toshinaga. Remarkably, approximately one-third of its expansive grounds are occupied by water moats, making it one of Japan's rare water moat parks. The walking paths along the moats are enveloped by trees, perfect for strolling while feeling the lingering atmosphere of the castle town. Within the park grounds stands Imizu Shrine, the chief shrine of Etchu Province, where visitors can also pay their respects. Taking a breather on the main citadel plaza or grassy areas helps ease the fatigue of town exploration.
Tips
It's only about a 5-minute walk from the Daibutsu. Lunch is available at restaurants scattered around the park perimeter and toward Takaoka Station, so it's recommended to eat before or after your stroll. The grounds are extensive, so deciding which areas to visit helps with time management.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Afternoon light shining on the moats creates a beautiful scene.
