About this spot

An island floating off the north side of Tojinbo (東尋坊), long revered as the island of the gods. The approach itself, walking across the vermilion-lacquered Oshima Bridge (雄島橋) that stretches straight out over the sea, feels like a little adventure on its own. Ominato Shrine (大湊神社) sits enshrined on the island, and a promenade is maintained circling through the dense evergreen forest. On the rock surfaces you can see the same columnar rocks as at Tojinbo, as well as rocks that look like stacked boards, making it a perfect walk for a bit of nature observation.

Tips

The island's promenade has stone steps and rocky sections, making it unsuitable for strollers; go with a baby carrier and comfortable walking shoes. A full loop takes about 30 to 40 minutes, and on days with high waves, be careful not to approach the rocky areas along the shore. There's a parking lot at the foot of the bridge.
