A pristine white castle crowning the peak of Hachiyama (八幡山), this wooden castle keep is considered one of the oldest reconstructed wooden keeps in Japan. From the top floor of the castle keep, you'll enjoy panoramic views of the castle town rooftops spreading along the Yoshida River (吉田川) and the mountains of Oku-Mino (奥美濃) beyond—a picturesque landscape like a miniature garden nestled in the mountain valley. As you climb the wooden stairs, they creak with each step, allowing you to experience the distinctive charm of wooden construction. Paired with the views of the castle town stretching below, this spectacular spot is the perfect beginning for your Gujo Hachiman walk.
Tips
From the Castle Town Plaza (城下町プラザ) area at the foot of the mountain to the castle keep is about 15 minutes of steep slopes and stone steps. A baby carrier is more practical than a stroller, and sturdy walking shoes are essential. While the castle is accessible by car, the narrow roads require careful attention when passing. The stairs inside the castle keep are steep, so hold small children's hands during the tour.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Early morning is less crowded, and you can enjoy clear, crisp air while viewing the castle town.
