Stroll Along the Rugged Lava Cliffs While Enjoying Ocean Views
About this spot
One of Izu's premier scenic spots, formed about 4,000 years ago when lava from the Omuro Mountain eruption flowed into the ocean. The sight of white waves crashing against rugged black cliffs is awe-inspiring, and a well-maintained walking path called the "Picnical Course" runs along the cliff edge through pine groves. The white Kadowaki Cape Lighthouse at the peninsula's tip features an observation deck from which you can look down on the coastline. Walking enveloped by the scent of the seashore and the sound of waves allows you to experience the great natural beauty of the sea, quite different from the mountain scenery of the morning.
Tips
The walking path has rocky terrain and stairs, making it unsuitable for strollers; small children should be carried or held by hand. If parking at Kadowaki Parking Lot, the suspension bridge and lighthouse are within a short walk. Some areas along the cliff edge lack railings, so keep children in sight. Comfortable sneakers are essential.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes required. In the afternoon, the sea glistens and the cliff scenery is most striking.
