About this spot
Commonly known as Myogon-ji (妙厳寺), a Soto Zen Buddhist temple said to have been founded during the Muromachi period and counted among Japan's three greatest Inari shrines—one of the most premier pilgrimage destinations in the Tokai region. Uniquely featuring torii gates despite being a Buddhist temple, the spacious grounds offer many points of interest. Beyond the imposing main hall, the greatest attraction is the Reiko-zuka (Shrine Fox Mound) at the end of the approach lined with thousands of vermillion torii gates. The sight of countless donated stone foxes packed closely together is spectacular and will surely inspire you to take photographs. A leisurely stroll through the expansive grounds will be a deeply satisfying experience for grandparents who love temples and shrines.
Tips
Admission is free. The grounds are mostly flat and easy to navigate with a baby carriage; those with walking concerns can proceed at their own pace. Multiple paid parking lots are available nearby, making the location easily accessible by car. Visitor numbers are low in the morning, allowing you to view the Reiko-zuka leisurely.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 hours needed. Around 9 a.m., the grounds are quiet, allowing for unhurried worship and photography.
