A pine-lined avenue stretching between the Mie and Akasaka lodging stations on the old Tokaido Road, designated as a National Natural Monument. It preserves the spirit of the Edo-period Tokaido Road, protecting ancient travelers from summer heat and winter weather, and is also famous as the setting for one of the tales in Jippensha Ikku's 'Travels on the Tokaido in Search of Father and Son' (東海道中膝栗毛). The striking succession of pine trunks along this single path is picturesque in itself, and a leisurely walk through the dappled sunlight fully captures the spirit of traveling the historic road. As a concluding stop to a day exploring temples, shrines, and the gate town, it leaves a serene aftertaste.

Tips

The pine avenue follows a flat path and you can walk any distance that suits your ability, then turn back. Park at a nearby lot and walk to and from the trees. The pine grove offers abundant shade and makes for pleasant walking even in the late afternoon. A nearby museum preserving the history of the lodging station is worth a visit if time permits.
