Excitement over elegantly fluttering butterflies in the butterfly garden and insect exhibits from around the world

About this spot

An insect museum along the hiking trail that has stood for over 70 years since opening in 1953. The highlight is the 'butterfly garden,' where year-round free-flying butterflies drift gracefully through a warm greenhouse, sometimes landing on your shoulder or hat—even adults can't help but exclaim with delight. The museum displays living insects from Minoh's forests and beautifully arranged specimens, revealing the surprising diversity of species inhabiting this nearby mountain. With an affordable adult admission of 280 yen, it's the perfect casual stop along your hike. Even those slightly squeamish about insects can enjoy it since most exhibits are viewed through glass, and you're sure to have new conversation topics to share.

Tips

About 15 minutes' walk from Minoh Station along the trail. Check the museum's official website beforehand as there are regular closures. When butterflies land on you, resist the urge to brush them away—simply wait patiently for them to fly off. The compact museum can be toured thoroughly in 30 minutes to an hour.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. On sunny mornings when temperatures rise, butterflies in the garden are most active.
