About this spot
An ancient temple of mountain ascetic traditions nestled beside the stream midway along the trail. According to legend, it was founded in 658 during the Asuka period by En no Gyoja (役行者), the founder of mountain ascetic practices, and is said to house Japan's earliest Benzaiten shrine. It's also known as the birthplace of the lottery system in Japan, where the 'Minoh Lottery' was held during the Edo period. The scenic interplay of the vermilion bridge, stream, and overhead maple canopy creates one of the most photogenic spots on the course—photography enthusiasts won't be able to put their cameras down. The temple grounds are peaceful, and worshipping to the sound of the river is a welcome respite for tired legs. Pray to the Benzaiten, known for luck and fortune in the arts, for safe travels and enhanced fortune, then continue onward to the trail's grand finale.
Tips
About 15-20 minutes' walk from Minoh Station along the trail, just past the Insect Museum. Admission is free and you can visit directly from the trail. If you wish to receive talismans related to fortune or a temple stamp, do so during the office hours. The grounds have stone steps, so watch your footing, and don't miss the view of the stream from the vermilion bridge.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes. Mid-morning when dappled sunlight falls is ideal for photographing the vermilion bridge area.
