About this spot

Kagiya (鍵屋) was a riverside inn in the post town of Hirakata on the Kyoto Kaido, hosting passengers traveling on Sanjisshi-sen boats—large pleasure boats that went up and down the Yodo River. This municipal history museum is housed in the actual building, with the main structure dating to 1811 retaining vivid period atmosphere. Inside, you can learn about the post town of Hirakata through scale models of its streetscape, exhibits on Yodo River boat transportation, and displays of "Kurawanka" boats—floating food stalls that approached boats. The earthen floors, hearths, and riverside construction offer sensory experiences that textbooks cannot convey, providing fresh discoveries for children. From a large hall in the annex—used as a restaurant in modern times—the Yodo River unfolds before you, revealing another side of Hirakata quite different from the amusement park. This museum is the core stop on any post-town walk.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from Keihan Hirakata Park Station (京阪枚方公園駅), facing the old Kyoto Kaido along the Yodo River. Admission is affordable at ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for elementary and middle school students. Closed Tuesdays (with possible changes on holidays), so confirm opening before visiting. Since it's a historic building with many steps, it's best to leave strollers by the entrance and carry children through.

Best time to visit
