Hike the walking trail for approximately 2 hours featuring emerald pools, waterfalls, and suspension bridges

About this spot

The gorge in Amakawa Village, Nara Prefecture, is sometimes called 'the clearest stream in Kansai,' where the Yamakamigawa River creates emerald-green pools, waterfalls of various sizes, and consecutive suspension bridges forming a magnificent landscape. The walking path is maintained along the river, and from the suspension bridge spanning above the waterfall, you can experience the thrill of looking down at the water cascading below your feet. Known as a scenic spot for fresh green foliage in summer and cool air, as well as autumn leaves, the water's exceptional transparency will leave you speechless. Stunning views appear with every step, so friends who love photography will find themselves unable to stop taking pictures. Walking straight through from the Amakawa-kawai side toward the Dorogawa Hot Spring direction makes for a full-scale 2-hour hike—the perfect course for enjoying conversation while soaking in plenty of negative ions.

Tips

From Kintetsu Shimoji-guchi Station, take a Nara Kotsu bus for approximately 1 hour and get off at 'Amakawa-kawai' to reach the trail entrance. By car, you can use paid parking lots around the gorge, though spaces are limited; arriving early is recommended during peak seasons like fresh greenery and autumn foliage. The walking path features rocky terrain and wet wooden steps, so non-slip trekking shoes are essential. Use the restroom near the entrance beforehand.

Best time to visit

Approximately 2 hours required. Walking in the morning when the air is clear makes the pool color shine most beautifully
