About this spot
An ancient shrine considered the head shrine of Awashima shrines found throughout Japan. It enshrines the god of medicine and healing, believed to bring blessings for women's health, matchmaking, and safe childbirth. Most famously, it's known for doll memorial services. The grounds display countless dolls donated from across Japan in rows—a sight so striking you'll never forget it. Every March 3rd, the 'Doll Floating' ceremony sends dolls out to sea on a white wooden boat. After your prayers, head to the shrine approach filled with seafood restaurants and souvenir shops. Fresh catches from Katan Harbor appear in bowls and set meals. Offering prayers for matchmaking together and savoring the treasures of the sea—this is the highlight of your Katan date.
Tips
About 20 minutes' walk from Katan Station. Shrine approach restaurants get busy around lunch, so finish your prayers first and aim for right after opening for a smooth experience. The dolls on the grounds are dedicated to memorial services, so photograph respectfully. Amulets related to matchmaking and health are popular at the gift counter. Katan Beach, the next stop, is just a short walk away.
Best time to visit
Takes about 1 hour. Visiting for prayers and lunch around 11 AM, before the approach restaurants get crowded, flows smoothly.
