Katan Beach (加太海水浴場)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A gentle, shallow beach on Katan's west side, with Tomogashima Island directly ahead and Awaji Island beyond—a grand, open vista. Summer brings swimmers, but other seasons offer only the sound of waves on quiet sand. Walking slowly along the water's edge with the sea breeze, conversation naturally flows. As evening falls, the setting sun catches the Kii Channel waters, shimmering beautifully—this beach is also known for its lovely sunset views. Whether searching for shells in the sand, watching passing ships, or simply doing nothing, these quiet moments are a true treasure. Just steps from Awashima Shrine and perfect after shrine prayers and lunch for a digestive stroll.

Tips

Just a short walk from Awashima Shrine, about 15 minutes from Katan Station. Outside the summer swimming season, the beach is quiet and peaceful. Sand means sneakers are safer than heels. The seaside path has little shade, so bring a hat and sunscreen in summer. Restrooms and vending machines are available near the beach.

Best time to visit

Takes about 1 hour. Afternoon, with soft, gentle light, is perfect for a leisurely stroll.
