Meet the Sacred Monkey at the Head Shrine of Sanno Shrines and Pay Respects at the East and West Main Halls
About this spot
The head shrine of approximately 3,800 Hiyoshi, Hie, and Sanno shrines nationwide, this ancient temple stands at the foot of Mount Hiei in Sakamoto with a history of approximately 2,100 years. The sacred monkey (masaru), divine messenger of the gods, is beloved as a good-luck symbol connected to "banishing evil and victory," and you may encounter real monkeys within the grounds. The main halls of the West and East Shrines, both national treasures, feature a unique style called "Hiyoshi-zukuri" architecture, and the Sanno torii gate with its distinctive triangular form is found nowhere else. While the grounds are renowned for their exceptional autumn beauty, adorned with approximately 3,000 maple trees—among the finest in the Kinki region—the serene atmosphere created by towering cedar groves and stone bridges throughout the four seasons provides a refreshing backdrop. A leisurely morning visit through crisp, clear air will set the tone for a day immersed in history.
Tips
Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Sakamoto Hiei-san-guchi Station on the Keihan Ishiyama-Sakamoto Line, or about 20 minutes from JR Hiei-san-Sakamoto Station. Parking is available for visitors. Entrance fee: ¥300 for adults. The grounds feature gravel paths and many stone steps, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Weekends during fall foliage season can be crowded; visiting right after opening around 9 a.m. is peaceful and offers crisp air.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Around 9 a.m., right after opening, is quietest with clear, crisp air.
