About this spot

This memorial hall preserves the life of Nakamura Kōtayū, a ship's captain from the late Edo period who, while sailing from Shirako Port to Edo, was caught in a storm and drifted to the Aleutian Islands and then to mainland Russia. After about 10 years abroad, Kōtayū met with Empress Catherine II and was permitted to return home, bringing invaluable knowledge of Russia to Japan during its period of national isolation. The hall displays maps and documents tracing his journey and return, as well as related artifacts. Despite its modest size, the museum captivates visitors with a grand historical tale. Admission is free. Gazing at a world map while marveling with companions, "What a remarkable journey home!"—this is a hidden gem of Suzuka.

Tips

About 10 minutes on foot from Wakamatsu Station on the Kintetsu Nagoya Line; free parking available. Free admission with a compact exhibit; plan about 30–40 minutes. Note frequent closures (Mondays, Tuesdays, etc.), so confirm the opening calendar in advance. Preparing by reading Inoue Yasushi's novel 'Oroshia-goku Suimu-tan' (Russian Dream Tales) about Kōtayū will deepen your appreciation.
