Hokkaido's first zoo, long beloved by Sapporo residents. The star attraction is the Polar Bear House, where the massive creatures swim overhead through an underwater tunnel—a breathtaking experience that brings gasps from children and adults alike. In the spacious elephant enclosure, you can observe Asian elephants bathing in sand and water up close from inside, and cold-climate animals like gray wolves and red pandas thrive with characteristic energy—a truly northern zoo experience. Surrounded by Maruyama's woods, the garden offers both animal viewing and forest enjoyment. With rest areas and shops throughout, it's the perfect size for families to spend a leisurely half-day including lunch. A child-friendly zoo.

Tips

About a 10–15 minute walk through Maruyama Park, or about 15 minutes on foot from Maruyama-koen Station on the Tozai Subway Line. Admission is free for junior high school students and under, and stroller rentals are available—thoughtfully designed for families with young children. Note that the zoo has closures on certain days (such as the second and fourth Wednesdays), so check the official website in advance. Eating lunch at the zoo's dining hall or rest areas is efficient.

Best time to visit

Takes about 2.5 hours. Visit from late morning through early afternoon when animals are most active, taking a leisurely lunch break.
