Tracing the History of Japanese Beer-Making in a Meiji-Era Red Brick Factory
About this spot
Japan's only specialty beer museum, housed in a red brick building constructed in the Meiji period. You can trace Sapporo's beer-making journey from the Kaitakushi era through exhibits of massive brewing kettles, vintage posters, and labels, revealing the story of Sapporo Beer that evolved alongside the spirit of development. In addition to free self-guided tours, the popular paid Premium Tour includes commentary from a guide with tastings of reproduced historical beers. After your tour, you can enjoy paid tastings of brewery-fresh beer in the Star Hall, and the tasting comparison sets are a must for beer-loving friends. The red brick wrapped in ivy and the chimney marked with a star are perfect photo spots and build anticipation for the evening's Genghis Khan experience.
Tips
About a 10-minute walk from Higashi-kuiyakusho-mae Station on the Subway Tôhoku Line; the subway or taxi are also convenient from Sapporo Station. Self-guided tours are free; Premium Tours are paid and require advance reservation, so check availability early if interested. Closed Mondays (or the following day if Monday is a holiday). Tastings are paid; if you're drinking, don't forget to arrange a designated driver.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 1 to 1.5 hours. Visiting between 2 and 4 p.m., before the evening Genghis Khan experience, flows smoothly.
