Hand-Baking Senbei Experience and Visiting Artisan Workshops of Traditional Crafts

A hands-on experience spot on the shores of Goshogane Lake where you can see, make, and taste Morioka's traditional crafts and local industries. Many workshops line the area featuring Nanbu cast iron, dyeing, bamboo crafts, Nanbu senbei, Morioka cold noodles, and more, where you can view artisans' handiwork up close. The hand-baking senbei experience is popular with families, where you can bake your own rice crackers. The freshly-baked aroma is exceptional and makes a great travel memory. A thatched-roof Nanbu L-shaped house is reconstructed on the grounds, offering insight into how people and horses once lived together under one roof in old Nanbu. Admission is free with per-activity charges, so you can freely choose experiences suited to your children's age and interests.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Makiba Garden, located within the Morioka Regional Local Industry Promotion Center on the Goshogane lakeside. Both admission and parking are free. Hand-baking senbei and other activities can be enjoyed on the day, but some experiences require advance reservations—check ahead. The gift shop has a full selection of Morioka souvenirs including Nanbu cast iron and senbei.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1.5 hours. Experience reception closes early, so arriving in early afternoon is safer.
