A unique underground aquarium and science museum, rare in Japan, created by repurposing a work tunnel from an oil stockpiling facility. A symbol of recovery after being completely destroyed in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the facility's tunnel tank recreates the waters of Sanriku, where salmon and sea turtles swim freely. The Sakana-kun corner, overseen by this popular fish expert, features autographed illustrations and displays of rare fish that captivate children. The museum also offers various engaging experiences, including demonstrations of ama free diving and interactive activities with doctor fish. Combined with the above-ground exhibition facilities, this compact yet comprehensive venue offers 1-2 hours of family-friendly fun for all three generations and is a must-visit highlight of Kuji sightseeing.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from Kuji Station with free parking available. The facility is equipped with elevators and ramps, making it easy to navigate with elderly family members. Demonstrations and events like ama diving performances and fish feeding have fixed schedules, so check the schedule upon arrival. The museum may be closed on Mondays, so confirm opening hours in advance for peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1.5 hours. Late morning to early afternoon allows you to catch demonstrations and events, and the indoor location means you can enjoy yourself regardless of the weather.
