One of Japan's largest mining ruins said to have a history of 1,300 years, the Ogosezawa Mine once produced copper and gold that supported modern Japan. The mine's tunnels are publicly open as a tourist attraction. The visible tourist tunnel stretches approximately 1.7 km. One step inside and you'll be enveloped in crisp air around 13 degrees Celsius year-round. You can trace underground history chronologically from reproductions of hand-dug workings from the Edo period to modern mining sites with rows of rock drills. The dimly lit tunnel, overhanging rock faces, and seemingly endless horizontal shafts—it's irresistible for adventure-loving children, offering a real underground experience. In the outdoor area, experiential activities (additional fee) such as gold panning and gemstone digging are popular, allowing you to experience the thrill of finding "treasure" with your own hands. The fact that it's enjoyable even on rainy days is a welcome point for families.
Tips
Approximately 15 minutes by car from Michi-no-Eki Kazuno Antraa. The tunnel interior is cool at around 13 degrees even in mid-summer, so be sure to bring a cardigan or light jacket. While the walkway is well-maintained, some sections are wet, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Experience activities like gold panning have separate fees and reception times, so check when you arrive for smooth operations.
Best time to visit
Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours required. For a leisurely enjoyment of both the tunnel and experience menu, entry from the morning is recommended
