Beyond the approach stands an imposing temple gate, and the grounds feature impressive temple structures including a five-story pagoda adorned with intricate carvings. Walking through the cedar-shaded grounds envelops you in a solemn atmosphere. The five-story pagoda, said to have been built for the repose of fish, is a rare structure in Japan reflecting Shonai's maritime heritage. Children enjoy looking up at the grand gate and searching for dragon carvings throughout the temple, making it an engaging experience for families new to temple visiting. The Kaigui Pond in the deeper reaches of the grounds was once nationally famous as the "human-faced fish pond," offering an interesting conversation piece.

Tips

About 15 minutes by drive from Yura and Hakusan Island; a spacious free parking lot is available. Temple grounds are open for free worship. Since there are gravel paths and stone steps, a baby carrier is more practical than a stroller.
