The Kaminoyama Castle Local History Museum: sweeping views of the Zao range and castle town from the keep's observation deck, feeling like a castle lord

About this spot

A local history museum built in the form of a castle keep, standing at the site of the former Kaminoyama Castle (also called Tsukioka Castle), once called "the finest castle of Ushu Province." Inside the museum, exhibits introduce the history and folklore of Kaminoyama, the history of Kaminoyama hot spring, and the nature of the Zao mountains, capturing children's interest in materials related to the castle and castle town. Climbing to the observation deck on the top floor offers sweeping views of the Zao mountain range, the Kaminoyama basin, and the hot spring town spread below—a vista that makes you want to shout "Yoo-hoo!" in castle lord fashion. The white-walled castle keep rising from the green of Tsukioka Park is a picturesque sight in itself and perfect as a backdrop for family photos. After playing at Renaworld, this symbol of Kaminoyama is the perfect way to begin the castle town adventures of the afternoon.

Tips

About 10 minutes on foot from Kaminoyama Onsen Station; about 10 minutes by car from Renaworld. As the path to the keep involves climbing the park's slope, a baby carrier might be more practical than a stroller. At the base of the castle is a free foot bath where you can rest weary feet. The museum closes for exhibit changes and other reasons, so check opening information in advance for peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Takes about 1 hour. Afternoon provides clear views from the observation deck. The cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons are especially recommended in combination with the park
