Shirakawa Komine Castle is a hilltop castle that was extensively renovated in the early Edo period by Niwa Nagashige, the first daimyo of Shirakawa, and is known as a rare stone-walled fortification in the Tohoku region, designated as a National Historic Site. The three-story tower and front gatehouse, destroyed during the Boshin War, have been faithfully reconstructed in wood based on Edo-period drawings, and visitors can actually climb inside to experience the original construction. From the windows of the three-story tower, Shirakawa's townscape spreads below, and the adventure of climbing the steep wooden stairs step by step delights children. Beloved as a cherry blossom viewing spot, the dignified silhouette of stone walls and white-plaster tower has earned Shirakawa Komine Castle a place among Japan's 100 Famous Castles. The spacious grounds, now organized as Shiroyama Park, are perfect for a leisurely three-generation stroll.
Tips
Only about a 5-minute walk from JR Shirakawa Station, with free parking available. Remove shoes before entering the three-story tower; the stairs are steep, so grandparents and small children should hold the handrail and climb slowly. Admission is free, but the tower's opening hours vary by season, so visiting in the morning is recommended. The tower's interior is open seasonally, so a morning visit ensures access.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Visiting right after opening in the morning is less crowded, and the stone walls and white plaster catch the morning light beautifully.
