This shopping street, devoted entirely to yokai, runs about 800m from in front of Sakaiminato Station to the Honmachi arcade. As many as 177 bronze yokai statues, including Kitaro, Medama Oyaji, Nezumi Otoko, Nurikabe, and Ittan-momen, are scattered along the sidewalk, each with its own expression and pose, so you'll lose track of time just walking and searching for your favorite yokai. Along the street are lined up specialty shops selling yokai goods, bakeries and eateries with a yokai theme, and if you go around with the Yokai Guidebook stamp rally in hand, kids will feel like they're on an expedition. For lunch, it's recommended to enjoy a seafood rice bowl made with Sakaiminato's proud fresh catch at one of the eateries along the street.

Tips

Getting the Yokai Guidebook (the stamp rally card), sold at tourist information centers and other spots, first makes the walk more fun. Entering a restaurant for lunch before noon helps you avoid the crowds. The statues are scattered on both sides of the sidewalk, so checking one side on the way there and the other side on the way back lets you tour efficiently.

Best time to visit

About 3 hours (including lunch). Starting your walk in the morning means fewer people, letting you take your time photographing the statues
