About this spot

A cultural facility that preserves a historic wealthy farmer's estate and garden from the Izumo Plain, relocated and carefully restored. Free admission, yet the experience is far more substantial than you might expect. Passing through a robust long gatehouse, you are greeted by the main residence. The Izumo-style garden, set against the distinctive Chikumatsu pine trees native to the region, spreads elegantly before you. A highlight is viewing the reconstructed Taoist tea room Takarateian (独楽庵), connected to the great tea master Matsudaira Fumai (松平不昧). The tea room "Shōraitei" (松籟亭) overlooks the garden, where you can rest your weary feet from a day of walking while enjoying matcha tea and traditional Japanese sweets. Seated on the veranda gazing at the garden, your full day exploring the mythical land gently settles into your heart.

Tips

Free admission and free parking (special exhibitions may have separate fees). Check ahead, as the facility is often closed Mondays. Matcha in the tea room is available for a fee and offers a prime viewing spot overlooking the garden.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 60 minutes. Late afternoon light bathes the garden in a gentle glow, creating the perfect quiet mood to conclude your journey.
