A Refreshing Morning Pilgrimage Passing Beneath 263 Steps of Vermillion Torii Gates

Situated on the mountainside of Taikoku Valley overlooking the town of Tsuwano, this shrine is counted among Japan's Five Great Inari Shrines. Notably, it is one of the few shrines in the nation written with the character "稲成" (inari-nari, meaning wishes will be fulfilled) rather than the standard "稲荷." The main attraction is the Thousand Vermillion Torii Gates along the approach. Approximately 1,000 vermillion torii gates are arranged without gaps along 263 stone steps, creating a spectacular passage through a vermillion tunnel leading to the main hall. From the shrine grounds with their vermillion-painted buildings, sweeping views of Tsuwano's town with its red traditional roof tiles and the Tsuwano River unfold before you, making the early morning pilgrimage in clear air particularly special. The shrine is held in deep local reverence as a deity of commerce, fortune, and removal of misfortune.

Tips

The stone steps number 263, so wear comfortable walking shoes. If you have concerns about stamina, you can drive up to the mountain-top parking area. Within the shrine grounds, you can experience the unique prayer ritual of Inari shrines by offering fried tofu and candles. Early morning is the best time, with fewer visitors and excellent conditions for photography.
