Just a few minutes' walk from the Shinkansen platform, this is Fukuyama's symbol, known as 'Japan's closest castle to a station.' This celebrated fortress was built by Mizuno Katsunari, a daimyo of the Tokugawa shogunate, during the Edo period as a bulwark for the western domains. The distinctive design where the entire north wall of the keep is clad in iron plates—unparalleled elsewhere in Japan—has been faithfully reconstructed, creating a striking contrast with its white plaster walls. The interior of the keep is open as Fukuyama Castle Museum, offering exhibits on the history of castle-town Fukuyama, armor, swords, and enriched interactive displays. The Fushimi Turret, said to have been moved from Fushimi Castle, and the Suji-gane Gate are designated Important Cultural Properties, retaining vivid traces of the castle's former glory. From the top floor, you'll command a panoramic view of Fukuyama cityscape and surrounding mountains—a fitting overture for a day's journey.
Tips
About 5 minutes' walk from the north exit of JR Fukuyama Station. Admission to the keep (museum) is charged, and there may be closure days, so check in advance. The castle grounds feature stone steps and gravel paths, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Early morning, shortly after opening, is less crowded, and the views from the top floor are clearest.
