Sandan-kyō (三段峡)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A great 16-kilometer gorge carved by the Shibaki River flowing through the West Chugoku Mountains, designated as a nationally Special Scenic Area. Walking about 2.7 km along pristine forest trails from the main entrance, you'll reach Kurofuchi, the highlight of the course. Flanked by sheer cliff faces, the deep emerald-green pool is best viewed from aboard a ferry boat, mere feet from the water's surface. The gorge seen from the boatman's slowly piloted vessel is a world encountered only by those who have walked to reach it. At the poolside stands Kurofuchi-sō restaurant, where you can spread out your packed lunch and rest while listening to the murmuring river.

Tips

Use the parking lot at the main entrance. Although the trail is well-maintained, there are wet rocks—wear non-slip shoes. The ferry boat may close during high water, so check the operating status at the site.

Best time to visit

Allow about 3 hours. When the sun is high, light penetrates the gorge and the water of Kurofuchi appears particularly clear.
