Panoramic View of Hiwasa's Sea from the Vermillion Yugi Pagoda and Stone Steps
About this spot
This ancient temple is the 23rd pilgrimage site of the Shikoku Pilgrimage and attracts visitors from across the nation as a temple known for warding off misfortune. The stone steps leading to the main hall are called the 'Misfortune Stairs,' and it is customary to ascend them one by one while praying—33 steps for women's misfortune and 42 steps for men's misfortune. On the elevated ground within the temple grounds stands the vermillion-lacquered Yugi Pagoda, which serves as the symbol of Hiwasa and is visible from anywhere in town. From beside the pagoda, you can get a panoramic view of Hiwasa's townscape and the Pacific Ocean, and the vista on a clear morning is exceptional. Climbing the stone steps together with your children while counting each one offers a small sense of accomplishment.
Tips
There is a free parking lot for visitors in front of the temple gate. Since there are many stone steps, wear comfortable walking shoes. Early morning has fewer visitors, allowing you to worship at your leisure.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour required. The morning air is crisp and the view of Hiwasa's sea from the Yugi Pagoda is crystal clear.
