A masterpiece of sukiya architecture standing on a cliff overlooking Garyūfuchi (臥龍淵), the most scenic spot on the Hijii River. This villa was conceived and constructed by a wealthy merchant who rose to fortune through wax trade, spending 10 years in planning and 4 years in construction, assembling master craftsmen from across the country. The main building, Garyūin (臥龍院), presents a thatched farmhouse appearance on the outside, yet inside reveals intricately designed sukiya-style construction. In every detail—transoms, alcoves, and shoji muntins—the artisans' skill and playfulness shine, revealing new discoveries with each viewing. Following the stepping stones through the moss-covered garden, you'll reach the Furojuan (不老庵), a tea pavilion cantilevered from the cliff to jut out over the river, said to be fashioned after a boat. The view with the Hijii River and verdant landscape filling the windows is nothing short of spectacular. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property, it stands as the crown jewel of Ōzu tourism.
Tips
There is no dedicated parking; park in the lot near Asamoya and walk. Shoes are removed before entering Garyūin, so shoes that are easy to slip on and off are convenient. A combined ticket with Ōzu Castle is also available. Hearing the staff's explanations doubles your appreciation of the architectural highlights.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Afternoon light gently illuminates the garden's moss and river surface, creating beautiful scenery.
