A Gorge Hike Through the Forest Kingdom Where Clear Water Glides Over Granite Bedrock
About this spot
A gorge approximately 12 kilometers long, located in the upper reaches of the Meguro River, a tributary of the Shimanto River, and included in Ashizuri-Uwakaiha National Park. Its most distinctive feature is the smooth granite bedrock polished by water over countless years. The gorge gets its name 'Namikaze' (slide bed) because the riverbed is smooth, slippery rock. The area around Mannenbashi Bridge at the entrance is equipped with parking and walking trails, and the wide rocky riverbed called Deai-Nami is perfect for family picnics. In the shallows, children can enjoy water play. Summer also sees it as a popular canyoning venue. A hike through the gorge while bathed in the cool air of the forest and clear stream offers a refreshing experience you simply cannot get in the city.
Tips
Free parking is available at the foot of Mannenbashi Bridge. The walking trail is maintained, but wet rocks are extremely slippery—wear slip-resistant shoes. If you plan to play in the water, don't forget a change of clothes and towels.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 hours. The gorge looks most radiant in the late morning or early afternoon when dappled sunlight plays on the water.
