Next stop: Walk together along the white sand beach of Futami, a town chosen among Japan's 100 best sunset spotsAbout this spot
A man-made beach park built along the shore in Iyo City, its palm-lined sandy beach carrying a hint of the tropics. The name comes from the legend of Goshikihime (五色姫伝説): five princesses of the defeated Heike clan, fleeing the Battle of Dan-no-ura, are said to have reached this beach and transformed into beautiful five-colored pebbles. Facing the calm, shallow waters of the Iyo Sea, the beach is ideal for a morning walk, and searching for colorful pebbles at the water's edge makes you feel part of the legend from the very start of the trip. Though the beach bustles with swimmers in summer, mornings are quiet, letting the two of you enjoy the sea air at a relaxed pace.
Tips
It's within walking distance of JR Iyoshi Station, and free parking is available at the park if you're driving. Since you'll be walking on sand, wear sneakers rather than heels. The air is clear in the morning, making the sea look especially beautiful.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. In the clear morning light there are few people around, making a walk along the water's edge especially pleasant.
