The Pristine White Lighthouse at Shikoku's Westernmost Point and the Spectacular Toyoyo Strait
About this spot
A pristine white lighthouse standing at the tip of Sada Misaki, Shikoku's westernmost point, and selected as one of Japan's 50 Best Lighthouses. The footpath from the parking lot to the lighthouse is approximately 1.8 km one way. Passing through a green tunnel of dense camellia trees and climbing up and down stairs, the white lighthouse appears against the blue Toyoyo Strait in a moment that's truly moving. The sea below, called Hayai-sui no Seto, is a strait with swift currents, and on clear days you can see across to the mountains of Sago (佐賀関) in Kyushu, about 14 km away. From the adjacent viewing spot on Gokago Island, you can find the perfect composition to capture the lighthouse and sea like a single painting.
Tips
The footpath from the parking lot to the lighthouse is about 25 minutes one way with ups and downs, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. Prepare drinks at the parking lot. Don't forget sun protection in summer and wind protection in winter.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 2 hours. In the afternoon, the lighthouse's white walls catch the light, making the contrast with the blue sea stand out.
