A museum that opens to the public the former residence of Saisuke Hirose, the first Director-General of the Sumitomo family who devoted his life to the modernization of Besshi Copper Mine. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property, the former Hirose Residence is a Western-Japanese hybrid mansion—traditional in its Japanese architectural style yet among the first to incorporate cutting-edge Western facilities of the time, such as mantlepieces and lightning rods. From the second-floor parlor, one can overlook the Niihama townscape beyond the garden, designated as a National Scenic Spot. The adjacent exhibition hall allows you to trace the footsteps of Saisuke Hirose and his role in the copper mine's modernization and Japan's industrial development through documents. Every design element of the residence breathes passion for modernization, offering a place where you can enjoy both mansion viewing and historical learning at once.

Tips

Free parking available. Since you must remove your shoes to enter the former Hirose Residence, wearing easy-to-remove shoes is convenient. As you walk on tatami and wooden floors, thick socks are comfortable in colder seasons. Plan extra time to include a garden stroll.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 1 hour. When afternoon light illuminates the garden, the view from the parlor is all the more beautiful.
