A historical museum named "Aoyama," the pen name of Mitsuaken Tanaka, a hero associated with Sakawa, widely known for housing numerous letters and calligraphy of Meiji Restoration figures including Sakamoto Ryoma, Nakaoka Shintaro, and Takechi Hanpeita. Sakawa flourished as the castle town of Fukao, the chief senior retainer of the Tosa clan who valued education, and produced many scholars and outstanding figures, earning it the title "educational town." Besides the handwritten documents of these heroes, the museum also traces the footsteps of local pioneers including botanist Dr. Makino Tomitaro. Perched on a small hill, the display room windows overlook the entire tiled-roof townscape. History enthusiasts will lose track of time in this rich, immersive space.
Tips
You can walk from the upper-town district, but the path has slopes and stone steps up to the hill, so wear comfortable walking shoes. Exhibition items may change during display rotations, so verify in advance if you're looking for something specific. Located near the entrance to Makino Park, it pairs well with an afternoon flower walk.

Approximately 1 hour required. Arriving before noon has fewer visitors, allowing you to carefully read the handwritten letters.
