About this spot

A submersible bridge about 121 meters long spanning the Niyodo River, distinguished by its lack of railings, designed so it sinks beneath the river during floods. From the bridge you can take in a sweeping view of the clear Niyodo River and the mountain-village scenery of Kamaida (鎌井田), and it's known for beauty that has served as a model setting for films and anime. Looking down from a high point on the far bank, a composition unfolds of a meandering river, the bridge, and the village, like a quintessential scene from old Japan, and it never fails to draw in photography enthusiasts. It remains in active use today as a local life-line road, and the sight itself, of a clear stream and mountain-village life resting side by side, is the highlight.

Tips

There are a few parking spaces at the foot of the bridge. Since it's still used as a local road, watch for passing cars, and because there are no railings, don't lean too far toward the river's edge while on the bridge. Don't forget to take an overview photo from the high point on the far bank, too.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. In the morning, mist tends to linger on the river surface, and the light streaming in at an angle makes the submersible bridge look even more photogenic.
