Trekking Through Uryuu Falls and the Niyodo Blue Valley as Rock Walls Part
About this spot
A 2.3-kilometer gorge carved by the Nakaatsu River, a tributary of the Niyodo River, with a succession of sights along the trail including stone pillars, Ryugu Gorge and other beautifully clear blue pools, and rugged rock formations. The highlight is Uryuu Falls at the far end of the trail, where 20-meter-high water plummets as rock walls jut out from both sides. Get close and the roar and rising mist let you experience the exhilaration of gorge trekking with your entire being. Stone statues of the Seven Lucky Gods dot the trail, making searching for them one of the pleasures of the walk. As you progress, Niyodo Blue pools appear, making you feel cleansed to your very soul.
Tips
A parking area is available near the gorge entrance. The trail features wet rocks and stone steps, so non-slip shoes are essential. The area around Uryuu Falls gets wet from mist, so protect your camera with a waterproof cover or bring a towel. Weekends during autumn foliage season are crowded, so arriving in the morning is recommended.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Morning light shines into the valley, making the waterfall mist and gorge pools shimmer vibrantly blue.
