About this spot

A roughly 32-meter bascule-style movable bridge spanning the entrance to Tei Port (手結港). During the hours when ships pass through, the bridge deck rises up almost vertically toward the sky. The sight of a road standing straight up like a wall is stunning, and it's a popular spot for photos that look like a 'road leading into the sky.' A schedule of opening and closing times is posted at the foot of the bridge, and the moment the crossing gate comes down and the bridge slowly starts to move is captivating even for those who aren't especially into vehicles. Tei Port itself is also one of Japan's most historic dug harbors, said to have been built by Kenzan Nonaka, a chief retainer of the Tosa domain. The contrast between the small port with its surviving stone-paved embankments and the still-active movable bridge, old and new civil engineering side by side, is a highlight worth taking your time over.

Tips

The times when the bridge is up and down are fixed, so it's best to check the opening and closing schedule posted at the bridge or on Konan City's tourism information before visiting. It's about a 20-minute walk from Yasu Station or Ya-Sea Park, along a coastal road with little shade, so bring something to drink.

About 45 minutes. Time your visit to when the opening or closing switches over, and you can watch the bridge move.
