The most prominent of many submerged bridges on the Shimanto River, this bridge stands farthest downstream and boasts the longest span at 291.6 meters. Its unique design—lacking railings so it submerges during floods—reflects the wisdom of river-valley communities who have lived alongside the river. The blue-painted bridge pillars, gently flowing water, and surrounding mountains create a landscape symbolizing Shimanto tourism. The bridge is so narrow that ordinary vehicles cannot pass each other, and walking across it offers the exhilarating sensation of the clear stream flowing just beside your feet. Viewing the bridge from below on the riverbed offers another recommended perspective.
Tips
Parking space available at the bridge approach. Since there are no railings, always hold the hands of small children. The bridge is a living road where vehicles pass through, so move to the side and yield to others.
Best time to visit
Plan approximately 50 minutes. Morning hours offer good light on the blue pillars and river surface, with relatively fewer tourists for a comfortable walk.
