Savor Freshly Made Kuzu Mochi at an Edo-Period Establishment
About this spot
An old-established shop dedicated to making pure kuzu (arrowroot) since its founding in the Edo period. Akizuki has long been known as a major kuzu-producing region, and this shop continues the traditional method of repeatedly rinsing kuzu roots in cold water to produce high-purity kuzu. At the in-house café, you can enjoy freshly made kuzu mochi and warming kuzu-yu, and the smooth throat-feel and refined sweetness are hallmarks of a long-established purveyor. The historic storefront and the array of pure kuzu and kuzu confections on display are also noteworthy—allowing you to enjoy a sweet rest in the castle town while shopping for souvenirs in one visit.
Tips
Freshly made kuzu mochi may take some time to prepare, so allow extra time. Kuzu and kuzu sweets are popular souvenirs, but fresh confections have a short shelf life, so always check the expiration date before purchasing.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1 hour. Early afternoon, after lunch, typically offers a more relaxed atmosphere at the café.
